The Health Blog Awards 2016

Last Friday, I attended the first-ever Health Blog Awards, hosted by the Health Bloggers Community and That Protein at The Collective. In case you missed it on my social media channels, I was totally blown away to find that I was awarded best yoga blog! I was as pleased as punch to be shortlisted and had absolutely no expectations on winning so this has really made me sit up and realise that pursuing yoga and wellness is really what I want to do and so now is the time to really throw myself into developing Green+Aquamarine. Also, I'd like to give a huge well done to everyone else in my category (especially Natasha from Dance Flow Lift who has just become a Sweaty Betty ambassador!) and all the other winners -you can see the full list here. All photos in this post were taken by the talented Marie Claire of Fluke Photography, who was absolutely lovely (as well as being a self-proclaimed happiness ninja!).

Natasha and I got ready for and went to the event together, which was held at the work/living integrated space of The Collective Hub, which is exclusively rented out to young London professionals in the aim of building a like-minded community. Amanzitea, who were the sponsors of the yoga and spirituality awards, kept us all hydrated with healthy mocktails. I started with and elderflower and rose mar-tea-ni with real rose buds and later had a spicy lemon and matcha drink, which really hit the spot. Food was supplied by Soulmate Food and was so flavoursome. I saved my flapjack for the next day on the coach, and since I had run out of time to buy lunch it was a lifesaver!

The whole event was led by the HBC's boss lady Fab, with Zanna Van Dijk, Hazel Wallace,  Pixie Turner and Darlene McCormick as judges. We started with a Q&A session with the judges, which was so helpful for getting those niggling blog tweaks answered. The most interesting suggestion was, when working with brands, is the get an agreement down in writing. I don't think many of us had even considered this, but it came highly recommended to protect yourself and your finances. When the questions were opened up to the audience, I took the opportunity to ask Pixie for her advice on choosing a nutrition course. Her suggestion? Stick with universities, and look for proper accreditation to make sure that your course meets scientific research standards. Pixie kindly spoke to me after in a bit more depth. Other Q&A points included not undervaluing yourself as a blogger when charging fees, and how both Hazel and Zanna have made the move to working with an agency to help them when working with brands.

After a short interlude, we move on to the award ceremony itself. To my slight alarm, the yoga and spirituality award was the first to be called out, judged by Fab herself. Because of the spirituality element, my category was quite varied, with all of the blogs being very individual from each other. When Fab described the winning blog as "having it all" or "covering all bases", I figured it wasn't me as I don't really touch on the spirituality side of things. But when "scientifically-backed" and "speaking about ethical issues" and the environment were mentioned, Tash whispered "It's you!" and the next thing I knew my name was being called out! I had my photos taken with Antonia of Amanzitea, before the rest of the awards were read out. A bonus award for the Health Blogger of the year was unveiled, and the amazing Rachel of Healthy and Psyched won. Rachel (who will forever be the first person to recognise me from my blog!) is the nicest person and has such a professional looking blog and photography style, especially as a new blogger. I was rooting for her and she so deserved to scoop the top award.

After further mingling, sharing of business cards and a cheeky glass of prosecco, we all headed back home. If someone had told me that I would be in a room full of 100 like-minded people, collecting an award and growing as a community of health and wellbeing bloggers, I wouldn't have believed it, even a few months ago. With attendees from as far afield as Denmark, it is truly amazing to be part of such a group of creative and inspiring people. Getting on the coach home certainly brought me back to earth with a bump, but now I am so excited to keep growing and exploring new avenues.

Inspiration: Megan Wyllie

I really love discovering new people, amazing stories and real life inspiration. It's one of the best things about blogging, especially when you get to connect with some of these people. Today's inspirational lady is a course fellow of mine, and so in many respects seeing her journey has been even more impressive. I spoke to Megan, who has lost a seriously impressive 45 pounds in a year by cutting out sugar and making healthier lifestyle choices. As well as losing weight, Megan has gained confidence and was positively sparkling when I sat down over tea to have a chat.

Inspiration: how Megan lost weight at university by going sugar free. Via @eleanormayc

For many students, starting university is associated with gaining the "Freshers' 15", and for Megan the move was particularly difficult as she caved in to chocolates and cookies that had been previously unavailable in a vegan household. Alcohol too, provided an extra source of calories, both in the drinks themselves, and the food choices the morning after. At her heaviest weight, 218 pounds, Megan was heavier than her dad. Coupled with some unflattering birthday photos, Megan took her life into her own hands and made some serious changes

Going Sugar Free
Rather than following diets or counting calories, Megan made the decision to cut out sugar, admitting that the first month was really difficult. Initially, the food swaps weren't especially healthy, but they provided Megan with a doable way of weaning herself off sugar. Within a few weeks, results were showing, with Megan's tastebuds being overwhelmed by the sweetness of a slice of birthday cake. The cake was left unfinished. Over time, ready meals were largely ditched and Megan now ensures that her fridge is always stocked with salad ingredients and fresh soup. Her favourite go-to meal is a salad with halloumi, butternut squash, spinach and tomatoes. Although Megan tends to avoid snacking, she loves sweet potato fries or apple sliced dipped in softened peanut butter, and drinks lots of fruit tea throughout the day to keep her full and hydrated. Breakfast is probably the sweetest meal of the day, but still healthy thanks to homemade smoothies.

Staying on Track
To keep herself inspired, Megan finds YouTube videos of healthy recipes, and relies on the first Deliciously Ella book, and the Body Coach's Lean in 15 guide for when making meals. She also checks un with vegan YouTuber Kiera Rose who's video's promote body positivity and wellbeing. Megan's boyfriend has also joined her on eating healthily, with cooking together keeping them accountable to (and enjoying!) healthy meals.

Getting Fit
Although Megan's journey has largely been focused on the kitchen, she has also been getting fit. After experimenting in the weight's section, Megan took up running to help burn extra calories and will be very shortly participating in the Cardiff half marathon like a total #GirlBoss.

To round it off, Megan has kindly shared her top tips to getting healthy, especially for those at uni:

  1. Look for healthier alternatives to everything -it's the little switches that count
  2. Keep an eye on alcohol consumption, as the calories add up
  3. Get fit, even if you just start walking.
  4. Water. Lots of it.
  5. Avoid swapping one unhealthy thing for another (just because cream is sugar free, doesn't make it healthy!)
Thanks so much for speaking to me Megan. Have you struggled with weight, or found a new lease of fitness at university? Comment below and get the conversation started!

Inspiration: Sian Lewis from The Girl Outdoors

This month's Inspiration guest is Sian Lewis from The Girl Outdoors. I love Sian's blog and am always saving her inspiring posts on Bloglovin! Sian is a travel journalist who posts guides about places she has visited, tips and tricks for the outdoorsy girl, and kit reviews for all the gear that you could need. For serious travel envy and outdoor pursuits inspiration, look no further than The Girl Outdoor's blog.

Tell us about how you started writing about travel and outdoor living.
I began my blog as a journalism student in 2011 because I wanted somewhere to chart my adventures. It made me realise that the great outdoors and travelling are what I love to write about, and my journalism career has followed suit I guess! I'm now a freelance writer and video producer and feel very lucky to get to work in the field I love.

What would be an ideal weekend for you?
Perhaps a summer weekend on the Dorset coast with my climbing friends - we go to Worth Matravers a few times a year and camp. The days are spent climbing in the sun and swimming in the sea and in the evenings we'll have a whisky round the fire. Perfect.

Do you have any tips for staying healthy whilst travelling or spending a weekend outdoors?
I find travel can take a toll on your body pretty fast. I try to avoid too much street food, as tempting as it looks, and snack on fruit and vegetables when I can. I always take my running gear away with me and try to fit in a run or a yoga session. That said, I usually find it takes a week or two for my body to recover and feel fit again after a busy travel assignment.

You always seem to be doing an exciting outdoor sport or activity. Do you have a favourite?
I don't have a favourite, mainly because I'm not actually that good at any of the sports I love to do! I'm definitely a jack of all trades and I also have a short attention span, so my idea of a good workout week would include rope climbing, a run around the harbour, yoga, a walk in the hills and a surfing session. It keeps my brain engaged and I like training different muscles. My most regular activity is running though, because it's so easy to sling on your trainers and go for a quick sprint after work.

What do you get up to when you aren’t travelling or spending the day out and about?
More often than people think I'm just sat on my laptop trying to meet deadlines with a steady stream of coffee to hand. I also love to read and always have a book on the go. Of an evening if I'm not working out I'll be in the pub with my friends in Bristol.

Have you always been interested in healthy living?
I've always been into keeping fit, despite not being very good at PE and team sports growing up - I was more of a solo swimming, horse-riding, running kind of person growing up. I need regular exercise just to keep me sane! I do try to eat healthily but I'm not militant about it, mainly because if I couldn't have chocolate and wine I'd be distraught.

Where is your must-see travel destination?
I'm desperate to hike to Everest base camp. I've been to the Dead Sea in Israel and I'd love to have visited the lowest and (almost) highest places on earth. I recently hiked to the top of Mount Kenya and found the altitude a huge but rewarding challenge.

Interview with travel journalist Sian Lewis from The Girl Outdoors. Via @eleanormayc

Who, or what, inspires you the most?
I can't think of a single person but there's a whole army of cool women these days who are off adventuring around the world, and they inspire me hugely. Just this week Elise Downing is off running the coast of Great Britain and my friend Antonia Bolingbroke-Kent is driving around India on a motorbike. Those are some fearless ladies.

Name a favourite healthy meal.
Lentils and goats cheese is an easy one. If I have zero time I'll have Tenderstem with olive oil and garlic. And I'm a bit obsessed with courgetti!

Finally, what makes you happiest?
Being outdoors with friends. It sounds cheesy doesn't it? But I'm definitely a believer that happiness is best shared. Every year my mates get together for my birthday and we go and stay in a cottage on the coast, have a fire, go on lots of walks and usually get rained on. Those weekends have been some of the happiest of my life, and for me they sum up my main belief that you don't need to go far or spend a lot of money to find adventure and enjoy the freedom of the great outdoors.

Thanks so much for speaking on Green+Aquamarine Sian! You can find Sian blogging on The Girl Outdoors and on Twitter. Stay tuned for more talks with inspiring people next month.

Rumble with Sweaty Betty and 1Rebel

Boxing has caused a storm this year (as predicted here!)  and we have only just finished January. Specifically, high intensity workouts that utilise the work required to pump out kicks and punches, alongside the fat burning benefits of circuits and agility training. The ubiquitous workout has evolved to include skipping punchbag or partner training, followed by lots of core work. Possibly the most popular studio to get punching at is 1Rebel, London's boutique studio that offers pay as-you-go classes in boxing, cycling and circuit/treadmill formats. The Rumble class fuses shadow boxing (air punches) with martial arts. Personally, I am really keen to train at the studios myself, but with London visits short and much less frequent than I'd like, it isn't that easy.

Review: Sweaty Betty and 1Rebel's Rumble class, a free online boxing class from one of London's top fitness studios. Via @eleanormayc

So, I was pretty stoked when I received an email from Sweaty Betty a few weeks ago announcing the launch of their new Rumble-based Get Fit 4 Free campaign, in collaboration with 1Rebel. I always seem to end up blogging about the Get Fit 4 Free campaigns but it's because I have almost always been really impressed with them. And I have to say, I think this is my favourite yet.

Review: Sweaty Betty and 1Rebel's Rumble class, a free online boxing class from one of London's top fitness studios. Via @eleanormaycThe thirty minute class is broken into short segments, allowing you to really focus and push yourself. The first time around, I was mindful of disturbing sleeping housemates, but even without putting my all into the jumps and between-punch bouncing, I was still sweating. Mila Lazar, who ran the session, made use of a punch bag, whilst her partner coach, Daniel, demonstrated how to take the class using air punches, with holding onto light weights recommended. By the way, if you need another incentive to try boxing, just look at Mila's arms! #Goals

The sections were split into warm up, punching, mixed martial arts (MMA), and plenty of cardiovascular work, all rounded off by a final session of push ups and ab work. The punch work was pretty simple with just straight jab and cross punches and wasn't too intense. That being said, having to repeat punches on one side rather than switching right to left really fired up all of my arm muscles and got them aching. I liked the MMA section as it included some new techniques for me such as elbow strikes. There's plenty of kicking involved too, which is always satisfying, especially with a punch bag! The cardio session is the longest by a fair bit, but the boxing-style work and constant changes kept this part both relevant and interesting. I did struggle with some of the leg work as Mila was stood sideways on to the camera, although I probably would have managed better had I focused on Daniel's work more.

What I really like about this video is that it could be done at the gym, where you may have access to a punch bag, as well as at home. I would recommend having at least one go at home first to have an idea of the moves involved, so that you don't miss part of a sequence if you can't see the video clearly (extra win if you have wireless headphones and get to watch and listen without getting tangled). I've jotted down some of the MMA sequences, which I had a go at when next at the gym.

As a thirty minute class, this is perfect short workout to do if you are short of time, or to tag onto another twenty or thirty minute training session to maximise gym time. I teamed the Rumble class with a twenty minute run out in the elements to get a good start to a Sunday, which felt about right.

In all, I am really impressed with this workout. You need absolutely no equipment (but light dumbells or a couple of tins of beans will really have you feeling the burn!) and will still build strength and definition in the upper body, whilst burning some calories. Perfect for the gym-shy, boxing-curious, or anyone wanting to add something extra to their routine.  Oh, and the playlist is epic -fancy sharing it with us Sweaty Betty? Get ready to rumble.

Predicted Fitness Trends for 2016

2015 was really a year for the rise in the popularity of the health and fitness lifestyle. Alongside this, it has been great to see more alternative forms of fitness becoming more commonplace, such as women taking up strength training and HIIT.

1. Climbing
Looking for a new sport that challenges you mentally as well as physically? Look no further the climbing and bouldering. It is a brilliant workout for your arms and back, as well as requiring fitness, problem-solving skills and a certain amount of bravery as you swing for the next grip! Although bouldering and climbing can be done alone, they are much more enjoyable when done in a group setting. Challenge yourself with a few friends to an hour or two on the wall.

2. Pilates
Pilates has waxed and waned in popularity over the years, but stemming from the popularity of yoga and the introduction of reformer-based classes, I think 2016 will be another year for the exercise. Pioneered by Joseph Pilates in the early 1900's and first made popular in 1960's when the method was brought to the New York dance scene. Focusing on the core and sculpting of muscles, pilates is fantastic addition to your fitness routine. Check out Lottie Murphy for home-workout videos, or for information on her classes.

3. Boxing
With boxing rings being replaced by boutique classes and Victoria's Secret models picking up their gloves, boxing is becoming much more accessible. It is easy to why; this intense workout is a killer for working your core and builds arm strength. Classes are usually accompanied alongside drills or circuit training, with kickboxing sometimes being incorporated as well.

4. Fusion fitness
Yoga crossed with tribal dance, "piloxing" (pilates and boxing), running and strength training are all classes that blend two or more different exercises to maximise benefits and calories burn/muscle growth.  Keep your eyes peeled as I think similar classes will start popping up. For now, look at Sweaty Betty's online classes from last year. BarreASANA and Body by Simone's Dance Cardio are both great examples that you can do at home.

5. Smart tech
Since the Apple watch, wearable technology has seriously stepped up it's game. Fitness trackers are all the range now -see Argos for my and three other blogger's opinion on a selection of trackers, and keep an eye out here for a more detailed look at the Fitbit Charge HR. Fitness trackers are now seamlessly recording all our day-to-day activities and working alongside other apps to give really detailed data on your day.

6. Fitness fashion: mesh detailing
Moving away from the activities themselves, when it comes to what we wear at the gym or yoga studio is getting seriously beautiful. I have noticed clever cut outs and mesh panels being featured in leggings, tops and bars more and more often. Varley do some of the most beautifully cut pieces, and Sweaty Betty have really outdone themselves with asymmetric mesh details.

What are your predictions for fitness trends this coming year? Let me know about any classes or exercises that you plan to take up.

Om Yoga Magazine: Get Outdoors

One of the things that I love about yoga is that it pairs so well with a host of other activities. Whilst other sports and hobbies tend to promote themselves, yoga can be both a standalone activity, or used to support others. For example, runners benefit from yoga as it opens up stiff hips and works the arms that are utilised less on runs. Anxiety and stress disorders can be relieved by the meditative aspect of yoga. So, I was really pleased to see the Ordnance Survey's #GetOutside campaign being mentioned.

I love going on walks and being outside. Despite practicing yoga, going running and lifting weights at the gym, it is often when on a run that I feel my strongest and healthiest. There's something about conquering hills and scrambling down rocks that makes me feel alive. And, it seems, I'm not the only one.

TV presenter and wildlife expert Steve Backshall is an OS Champion, and is helping to front the #GetOutside campaign, which aims to encourage the British public to become more active in the great outdoors. With cars becoming increasingly relied upon, it is thought that most people in the UK won't walk anywhere that takes over 15 minutes, and 70% of us won't walk to the shops.

If you are really keen, there is also a competition being run: if you love being outside and want to encourage others to do so, send a 250 word piece to getoutside@os.uk explaining why you should become an OS Champion. Include any social media links, and two photos of yourself; one head and shoulders shot; one activity shot. The winners will take part in a photoshoot and a range of activities for the next year. On top of that, you could have access to a selection of OS products and cash sponsorship.

Walking is so basic to humans, and brings so many benefits. Even a brief walk around the park helps to clear the mind, and loosen up any stiffness from a day sat down at a desk. If you haven't already seen it, read my post here about moorland walks and see just how beautiful your local patch can be.

Next time you're going from A to B try this: mindful walking. Just like when meditating or in Shavasana, stay in the present moment. Acknowledge thoughts as they come into your head, and then let them go. Be aware of the sights, smells and breeze as you move. You may notice things that you have previously walked straight past.

Moorland Walks

I've rejigged my blog schedule somewhat to share with you a few photos of the beautiful countryside just a few miles from my home! Apologies for the slightly poorer quality photos; all were taken on my iPhone as I just jumped into the car this morning and went!

Moorland walks in National Park, the North Yorkshire Moors. Read for health and wellbeing posts.

Before the walk even got going I was surprised to find a young adder skin. Fortunately, we didn't disturb any of the snakes on our walk as like as not they would have been trodden on. It was a lovely surprise though, as it is always interesting to find evidence of wildlife.

Moorland walks in National Park, the North Yorkshire Moors. Read for health and wellbeing posts.

We walked around a ridge, before taking a steep, craggy track down into the valley below. I love scrambling up and down routes; it always makes me want to start fell running! Anyone know of tips on how to start fell running without immediately twisting an ankle?! Being a pretty quiet area, we only passed a couple of other walking parties, including a lady in her sixties or seventies who looked fitter than most people half her age! #LifeGoals much?

Moorland walks in National Park, the North Yorkshire Moors. Read for health and wellbeing posts.

Moorland walks in National Park, the North Yorkshire Moors. Read for health and wellbeing posts.

Being late August, the heather was out in full force, and smelt heavenly; just like the heather honey that gets sold all around the moors. Hill walking, or hiking, seems to be a popular pursuit on the west coast of the states, but is less popular here in the UK. Maybe it is the changeable weather, or the fact that for many, decent hill walks are a long distance away. I certainly don't go walking as often as I wish, but do try to get out regularly. For me, just getting outside contributes to living an active lifestyle even more so that sweating it out in the gym for an hour before sitting down for the rest of the day.

With the last few weeks of summer stretching out before us, I would urge you to get out and enjoy whatever happens to be on your doorstep, be it hidden gems and parks in cities, or open countryside.

Fitkit: The Bestseller's Edit

Sometimes the lure of shopping gets stronger than usual and I start making hypothetical wish lists to get spending off my mind! After receiving a few restock emails recently, I started thinking about bestselling items, and what makes an item become a must-have, hero product. A combination of design and functionality comes together in a sports bra or pair of leggings and, perhaps with a little endorsement from a popular blogger, something of a sell-out frenzy starts! Today I am sharing some of the items that I think have become exceptionally popular, which may perhaps inspire you to build your luxe workout wardrobe... or alternatively, to strive towards uniqueness!

Bestseller's Edit

  1. Rockall compression tights, £85, Vie Active, at Active in Style. The 7/8th length version are at the top of my list! With a top-quality compression fit, fierce pattern and flattering dark colours, it is easy to see why these leggings have become a sell-out.
  2. Hey Girl water bottle, £22, Lorna Jane at Active in Style. This huge (1 litre!) bottle won't spill, is BPA-free and motivating. Pricy, yes. But worth it? It seems so.
  3. Hair ties, £7.50, Hey! Hola at Hip and Healthy. These knotted hair ties are a must have from the United States for both in the gym, and out.
  4. Existence run shorts, £42, Lorna Jane at Active in Style. As the weather (hopefully) heats up, or we get our sweat on on holiday, shorts are a must-have. The print on this pair is just too pretty to pass up.
  5. Pacesetter running tunic, £32 (sale price), Sweaty Betty. The pacesetter top features every season at Sweaty Betty, made popular by it's quick-drying properties, headphone port and mesh detailing. At full price, this vest retails at £65.
  6. Vimsa yoga leggings, £80, Sweaty Betty. Another staple design, this particular colouration will be available for the up coming season. These leggings are reversible, 100% opaque and ultra-comfy. It is worth keeping an eye out when the sales come around for a bargain, if you don't mind missing out on the latest colour variation.
  7. Spectra bra, £38, Alo Yoga at Hip and Healthy. Cult brand Alo Yoga have produced one of the prettiest yoga bras ever. With a simple and dainty cut, this bra won't impede deep stretches and binds, but is best suited to small to medium chests. With mesh details, this bra can keep up with fast yoga flows and spin classes.
Does an item being listed as a bestseller give you the confidence to buy, or encourage you to seek more unusual options in order to stand out? Comment below, and give me a shout if you have tried any of these items!

Getting my Protein Fix with MyProtein

I have to say, I am fairly new to the protein and supplement scene. As someone with an interest in fitness, getting my protein in is definitely important to me, but I have mainly been getting this from dietary sources, and have potentially not been meeting my daily requirements. So, when MyProtein offered to send me a few products to try and review, I was definitely interested! I thought I would share some ways to get extra protein into your day.

MyProtein, review, protein, supplements, weightlifting

I always look towards plant based sources where possible, so I was pleased to find a mix of pea, hemp and rice protein powder together and, moreover, in a chocolate flavour. Whey protein powders get all the interesting flavours so this was pretty exciting. Although I am used to less than sweet taste of pea protein, MyProtein also sells flavdrops, which a perfect for those of you new to vegan powders. The flavdrops are very concentrated and just smell amazing. For a filling protein shake, blend a 30g scoop of protein with almond milk, a banana and some toffee flavdrops if desired. The mini protein shakers from MyProtein are the perfect size for one portion to take on the go with you.

MyProtein, review, protein, supplements, weightlifting

I love, love pancakes for breakfast! (who doesn't?!). MyProtein's pancake mix uses whey protein and golden syrup flavouring, making it perfect for after a morning workout. Stuart and I enjoyed a lazy Sunday brunch of fruit and honey-topped pancakes and it kept me going for absolutely hours. It reminded me of the Betty Crocker pancake mix that I used to use whenever it we had pancakes, needing only liquid adding to it, and then being good to go. Super easy. If you prefer making pancakes from scratch, then adding a scoop of protein powder to your preferred pancake recipe may be more up your street.

MyProtein, review, protein, supplements, weightlifting

For protein on the go, MyProtein has created the surprising snack of protein-rich bread sticks. Rich in olive oil, these little morsel's are 30% protein and are just perfect with sun-dried tomato flavoured hummus. They are great to pop in your desk or bag for when you need a little something to keep you going. I had some alongside strawberries from a pick your own farm in the middle of a bike ride. It was a perfect way to refuel and get ready for the next ten miles of cycling! Warning: you'll need scissors to get in to the bag if you don't want to tear it in two whilst on a picnic!

You can see the whole range of MyProtein's women's fitness range here. How to you get your protein intake each day, or do you focus on other aspects of nutrition?

Disclaimer: I was sent a selection of MyProtein products for the purpose of review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Adidas and Recycled Ocean Plastic Trainer

Today I am sharing one of my favourite collaborations... ever. It isn't often that my passion for the oceans and protecting the planet gets to go hand in hand with fitness, but then a pair of prototype Adidas trainers were presented at a UN and Parley conference. And with that, my dreams came true.

Adidas, Parley, Sea Shepherd, Ocean Plastic

Sea Shepherd, a marine conservation organisation, collected ocean plastic whilst on a 110 day expedition that tracked illegal poaching ships that Adidas then crafted into beautiful trainers. I truly love the aquamarine netting finish on the shows; the design is so fluid and sleek. The prototype is part the range of Ultra Boost shoes, an energy-returning running shoe that is Adidas' answer to Nike's Free Runs. You can get your hands on the rest of the Ultra Boosts now, but there is no confirmed release date for the prototype, or if they will be released. However, from early next year, Adidas will begin incorporating recoiled plastics into their shoes.

The trainers mark the beginning of Adidas and Parley's partnership to create more sustainable fitness wear. One of the aims of Parley is to make positive differences to the plethora of issues that face our oceans today, by utilising art and creativity.

“We need to defend diversity on land and in the sea and we need solutions, and these solutions can only be realized by harnessing the imaginative side of human culture – the arts.”

I cannot even begin to highlight the importance of preserving our oceans. The nature of currents mean that much of our plastic waste ends up in one of five vortexes or "islands" of plastic, just floating in the middle of the ocean. On top of that, plastics are broken down into tiny mircoplastics, which get eaten by small animals, move up the food chain until we end up consuming them. Plastic for lunch? That is a scary thought.

Whilst these shoes are by no means an ultimate solution to plastic waste, turning plastic from waste into a resource completely turns traditional thoughts on their heads. To my mind, it is exactly what we should be doing.

I would really urge you to take a look at Parley's website. It is a real eye-opener of what issues we face, but also hope for the future. Between warming and acidification, overfishing, shark finning, plastic pollution and coral damage, the seas have a lot to deal with. My greatest interests and concerns is ocean plastics; it is what I would like contribute research to and raise awareness of. So for respected, iconic brands to be getting on board is the most exciting thing. For fitness wear that is not only fashion-forward, but sustainable and revolutionary as well is so exciting.

I really hope that Adidas and Parley are paving the way for intelligent and sustainable fitness fashion and kit, and that we will get to see more brands taking up the mantle.

Free People: Movement Collection

If there is a brand that sums the sun-soaked, US boho-style, it has to be Free People. Think tassels and crochet and floaty florals and you are about there. A while ago, Free People launched their Movement activewear collection, and I've been lusting over it ever since. The line is divided into four categories; yoga, dance, surf, and run, all of which are gorgeous. Some, if not all, of the buyers for the collection are also fitness instructor, so the pieces are designed to work with you in your movement.

Key features of the movement collection include cut-out and knotted detailing, bold prints and a variety of colours.  I love the muted colour, stirrups and high waist of these leggings:

Free People is a little bit on the expensive style, especially some of the surf collection. However, if you are looking to treat yourself, the collection is a great alternative to other premium activewear brands, with pieces that will really make you stand out.

Free People are currently sharing a few tips for summer fitness over on their blog, and are also interviewing some of their in-house experts. How will you be keeping fit over summer?

How to make time for fitness

There's a little saying that goes around that states "you cannot find time, but you kind make it" or thereabouts and it is something that I really believe in. I think many, or even most of us can say that we would describe our lives as "busy" and finding time for things like exercise and looking after yourself can definitely slip to the back of the priorities list.

Fitness tips

Every moment is an opportunity
Do you find that you have small gaps in your day? Lunch breaks, waiting for the train home, long commutes? All can be utilised. I catch up with emails and social media whilst on the bus, and then use the few minutes before work to do some beach yoga or exercises. Look out for evening classes if this is when you have your most free time then.

It all counts
You don't need a clear hour or two for exercise.  Throwing in a few ten minute sessions can be really beneficial, especially for flexibility and light muscle work. Set yourself a target of say, 50-100 press ups per day, in sets of 10-20 at a time. Or, if you have a slightly larger slot to workout in, go for a HIIT circuit. In less than half an hour you can be sweating and start to see serious results if you keep at it.

Fitness tips

Make you day active
One of the best examples of this is turning part, or all of your commute into a form of activity such as walking, cycling or running. Even if you have a long journey, see if you can get off the bus stop a little earlier or walk instead drive to the railway station. See what you can fit in during your lunch break. Even a walk provides great benefits, but also keep an eye out for short mid-day classes. Just don't forget to bring a few key toiletries to freshen up with!

Reset your alarm
If you can possibly manage it, sacrificing that extra hour's sleep is a great way to both get your exercise in and energise you for the day. The morning is definitely my favourite time to work out; it gets it out of the way in case anything comes up unexpectedly, and I always feel set up for the day. Go for a run as the sun rises, or sign up to a gym close to your work and lay out your kit the night before to make the a.m. workout as efficient as possible.

Fitness tips

Don't stress it
With all this being said, you don't have to micromanage, or beat yourself up if you can't always fit exercise in! Rest, both physically and mentally, is really important too.

I hope these suggestions helped and you are able to have more active days!

Sweaty Betty: BarreASANA

I have previously talked about Sweaty Betty's Get Fit 4 Free campaigns, and I find myself posting about them again, because I really do think they are fantastic. This month's campaign is BarreASANA, a blend of barrecore workout and vinyasa-style yoga flow. Lead by ambassador Emily, with Maria and Chiara demonstrating modifications, the online class is easy to follow, whatever your experience level or ability. I'm fairly new to barre-workouts, having tried just a few online classes since my days of ballet-conditioning at gymnastics. However, I was pleased to find that, whilst challenged, my strength training and yoga practice meant that I was able to follow Chiara's more challenging modifications throughout.

Sweaty Betty, Barre Asana, Get fit 4 free

BarreASANA is described as a fusion fitness, and I love the way that the stretching yoga flow sequence and warriors works with the isometric barre moves. The two exercises both strengthen using body weight, and facilitate flexibility so fit together very well. Although the class flowed together very well, I found that having it organised into sections helpful, particularly as it minimised me having to adjust my laptop as I moved from standing to floor work. There was some nice hip and shoulder opening sections, as well as ab work so I felt like my whole body benefitted from the session.

I was surprised to find myself working up a sweat, as well as feeling the fabled "barre burn!" Unlike when I do my weight-based workouts, I didn't feel like my muscles were getting shortened after, which was great. Don't get me wrong though; I love weight work too! I do feel inspired to try more barre-style workouts though, to target smaller muscle groups that I haven't necessarily worked before.  Emily, Chiara and Maria also shared their top picks for a Sweaty Betty Barre workout:

I think I will be repeating this workout as an alternative to some of my usual yoga practice over the next month -perfect for a short break from revision in the exam period! If you live near London, Sweaty Betty are running these Barre classes in Selfridges at 6:30-7:30 pm on Mondays until June 1st, so book yourself a place! Not in London? No problem -the BarreASANA class can be found online here.

Have you tried Barre before, or been to any Sweaty Betty events? Comment below, and tell me about your experiences!

Five Ways: Plank-based Ab Exercises

Planking is a common feature in many an ab workout. It is such a good core move as your upper and lower abdominals, and obliques, as well as your chest, arms and legs. Modifications on the plank can work out even more muscles, so I am sharing five of the moves that I think are most effective for strengthening your core.

Classic Plank

Green+Aquamarine Plank Workout

Always make sure that you have got the basics sorted. Incorrect form can, like many abdominal exercises, strain your lower back. Resist the temptation to either sag or stick your hips up in the air -you want to keep your body straight, from your head to your ankles. Stack your shoulders above your elbows with forearms resting out in front of you or touching together. Step your feet back behind onto your toes, lightly engaging your abdominal muscles. If this is too difficult, drop to balance on your knees. Build up how long you can hold the plank -30 seconds, 1 minute, 3 minutes and beyond!

Side Plank Twists

I have to admit, I often struggle with side planks. My ankles just always seem to get in the way! Like the classic plank, you want to form a straight line. Lying on your side, rest on your lower forearm and push your hips up. Either stack your ankles, or bend the top leg behind you. Raise your upper arm straight up so that your body is facing forwards. Swing your upper arm down beneath your body so that your body twists down. This targets your obliques and stretches the upper back. Aim for 10 reps on each side.

Mountain Climbers

My favourite! Depending on how fast to choose to go, this move can get your heart rate right up, so is great for circuits. Hold a press up plank position, with hands directly below shoulders. Bend your right leg forwards so that the knee touches the right elbow, or comes just outside. Straighten, and repeat with your left side. Once you've got the hang of it, start to speed up. I like to do 20 reps at a fairly fast pace as part of a set of ab exercises. To also target your obliques, bend the knee towards your opposite elbow.

Walking Plank

This is as tough on your arms as your core! Start in the classic plank position. Place your right hand on the ground where your forearm was, and push to straighten the arm. Repeat with the left arm so that you are in a press up plank, making sure that your hands are still below your shoulders. Come back down, right arm first. Repeat with the left hand, keeping proper form. Try one minute on and one minute off for ten minutes, or do a single set until failure.

The Crawl

Start standing, legs shoulder width apart. Bend forward as if to touch your toes (don't worry, you don't have to reach all the way!). Now reach forward with your hands and walk them forwards. Keep going until you are in a plank press up position, or slightly beyond. Then, walk back up to standing. Try five sets of five reps.
